Cattlewomen's Creed

Believing that the livestock industry is of basic importance to world existence, we the Cattlewomen dedicate ourselves to support it with our labor and finances; to support it through information and publicity; to encourage its producers with our understanding and love; to do all in our power to instill in the coming generation the love of the land and of life, the humility and awe before nature, and the hope and faith in the future that is inherent in Cattlemen and Cattlewomen.

The Humboldt County Cattlewomen was first organized in 1955 and was originally called the Humboldt County Cowbelles. Their purpose was to encourage camaraderie between ranch women and to promote public relations for the beef industry. The first members held annual dinner-dances, rode in parades and worked on many beef promotion projects. In 1956, they began awarding an outstanding 4H girl each year with the Jessie Hunt Award (named after the 1st president). In 1970 they awarded the first annual Dorothy Kerr Award to an exceptional FFA girl. Girls are honored to this day each year with these awards. In 1964 the first "Cowbelle of the Year" was awarded for special member participation. Over the years, the Cowbelles worked on many beef promotion projects as well as other activities. In 1987 the name of the Cowbelles was changed to Cattlewomen, locally & nationwide. The Humboldt Co. Cattlewomen have continued supporting the beef industry and beef education. We participate in many activities such as tri-tip sandwich booths at local events, beef education projects in schools and in the public; and we do beef demonstrations at various functions. We open the Red Barn at Ferndale Fairgrounds at the annual Humboldt County Fair, where we raffle beef roasts and sell t-shirts, sweatshirts, brand bandanas, aprons, cookbooks and many other ranch and decorative items. We still have the spring dinner-dance and still give the Jessie Hunt and Dorothy Kerr awards, like the original Cowbelles. We now also have a very active scholarship program, awarding scholarships each year to students in agriculture education programs. Each year we also have a trail ride for members, where we have a lot of fun, food, swimming, horseback riding and more fun.

Recent Events

Pictured above are Humboldt County Cattlewomen pictured with Vita Witte, American National Cattlewomen president and below Humboldt Cattlewomen with A.G. Kawamura, California Secretary of Agriculture. These members attended a recent Region 6 meeting of the American National Cattlewomen in Napa. Secretary Kawamura spoke to Cattlewomen at this meeting about energy concerns as related to the cattle industry. He spoke about the energy plan 25X25, which sets a goal of 25% of California energy used by 2025 coming from renewable resources, such as wind, solar, bio fuel or new technologies. This is a plan to save people money, reduce dependence on foreign oil and reduce smog and greenhouse gases.
